Background
Dr. Aidun joined the Woodruff School as a Professor in 2003 after completion of a twoyear period as program director at the National Science Foundation. He began at Tech in 1988 as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. Prior, he was a research Scientist at Battelle Research Laboratories, Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell University and Senior Research Consultant at the National Science Foundation's Supercomputer Center at Cornell.
Research
Fluid Mechanics; cellular blood flow, suspension hydrodynamics, flow instability
BioEngineering; platelet margination, shearinduced thrombosis, clonal propagation by somatic embryogenesis
 Energy; industrial decarbonization
Dr. Aidun's research is at the intersection between fundamentals of the physics of complex fluids/thermal transport and applications to engineering and biotransport. He has a diverse research portfolio in fluid mechanics, bioengineering, renewable bioproducts and decarbonization of industrial processes.
A major focus has been to understand the physics of blood cell transport and interaction with glycoproteins (e.g., vWF) with applications to cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Aidun has pioneered the development of the LatticeBoltzmann (LB) method for suspension hydrodynamics and nonlinear dynamical systems. It is now well established that the LB method, based on the solution of discrete Boltzmann equation, is a superior computational method for hard particles as well as transport of deformable capsules and particle. These methods open the possibility for mechanical, thermal and rheological analyses of a broad class of deformable particle/fiber suspension flows.
Novel computational methods for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of suspension hydrodynamics including fiber suspension, biotransport and whole blood flow are ongoing research areas.
Fluidicsbased automation of sorting and selection of somatic embryogenesis for clonal propagation of plants is another are of active research.
Engineering applications are primarily in the decarbonization of industrial process through major process modifications. This is an area of growth with major funding from the Department of Energy and industrial collaborators.
Dr. Aidun is the recipient of several National and international awards including the National Science Foundation Presidential Investigator award, The Gunnar Nicholson Fellowship and the International Society of Coating Science and Technology’s L. E. Scriven award.
